MAGAZ3NE: High Stellar Velocity Dispersions for Ultramassive Quiescent Galaxies at z ? 3*

چکیده

In this work we publish stellar velocity dispersions, sizes, and dynamical masses for 8 ultra-massive galaxies (UMGs; log($M$/M$_\odot>11$, $z\gtrsim3$) from the Massive Ancient Galaxies At $z>3$ NEar-infrared (MAGAZ3NE) Survey, more than doubling number of such with dispersion measurements at epoch. Using deep Keck/MOSFIRE Keck/NIRES spectroscopy these objects in $H$- $K$-bandpasses, obtain large dispersions $\sim400$ km s$^{-1}$ most objects, which are some highest measured, $\sim40$\% larger those measured similar mass $z\sim1.7$. The sizes also smaller by a factor 1.5-3 compared to same $z\sim1.7$ sample. We combine small masses. galaxies, consistent Chabrier initial function (IMF). Considered alongside previous studies massive quiescent across $0.2<z<4.0$, there is evidence an evolution relation between - ratio as redshift. This implies IMF fewer low stars (e.g., IMF) higher redshifts conflict bottom-heavy Salpeter found their likely $z\sim0$ descendants, though alternative explanations different structure or significant rotation not ruled out. Similar data lower redshifts, see increase normalization dispersion, $z\gtrsim3$ trend steeper that $z\sim0.2$ early-type offset dynamical-to-stellar ratios.

Measuring Stellar Velocity Dispersions in Active Galaxies

We present stellar velocity dispersion (σ∗) measurements for a significant sample of 40 broad-line (Type 1) active galaxies for use in testing the well-known relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion. The objects are selected to contain Ca II triplet, Mg Ib triplet, and Ca H+K stellar absorption features in their optical spectra so that we may use them to perform extensiv...

Galaxies at Z = 3 around Dlas 3

RESUMEN El resumen será traducido al español por los editores. We are exploring the connection between damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs) s and Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) using deep – m lim,I (5σ)=26 m AB – broad band imaging (UBVI) of four wide fields (0.25deg 2 each) obtained at the Kitt Peak 4-m telescope with MOSAIC. Each field contains a DLA at z ∼ 3. We want to address the nature of DLAs a...

A High Stellar Velocity Dispersion for a Compact Massive Galaxy at z = 2 . 2 Pieter

Recent studies have found that the oldest and most luminous galaxies in the early Universe are surprisingly compact, 1–7 having stellar masses similar to present-day elliptical galaxies but much smaller sizes. This finding has attracted considerable attention 8–13 as it suggests that massive galaxies have grown by a factor of ∼ five in size over the past ten billion years. A key test of these r...

Truncation of stellar disks in galaxies at z ≈ 1 ⋆

We report here the first evidence for stellar disk truncation at high redshift, based on surface photometry of a sample of 16 high redshift (0.6 < z < 1.0) disk galaxies from the GOODS HST/ACS data. The radial profiles are best fit by a double exponential profile. This result agrees with the profile of disks in local galaxies. The cosmological surface brightness dimming at this redshift range o...

Cosmological Origin of the Stellar Velocity Dispersions in Massive Early-type Galaxies

We show that the observed upper bound on the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the stars in an early-type galaxy, σe . 400 km s−1, may have a simple dynamical origin within the ΛCDM cosmological model, under two main hypotheses. The first is that most of the stars now in the luminous parts of a giant elliptical formed at redshift z & 6. Subsequently, the stars behaved dynamically just as an ...
